Hawkeyes Fall to Oregon State

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team fell to Oregon State, 2-1, in the final day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Sophomore Devyn Greer started for the Hawkeyes in the circle. She went a solid four innings allowing one run on just four hits while striking out three.

The hits came at a premium for Iowa in this game. They finished the game with four hits and junior Grace Banes was responsible for two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers broke open the scoring early. They started the game with a double and a single to take a 1-0 lead. Offensively, Iowa was not able to get anything going early as they had just one baserunner through the first four innings.

In the top of the third, Oregon State had runners on first and second with one out. Freshman Avery Jackson got a grounder hit right to her as she stepped and third and threw it to first for the inning ending double play.

Junior Denali Loecker entered in relief of Greer to start the fifth inning. The Beavers loaded the bases with one out and a put-out at home prevented a run from coming across. Oregon State extended its advantage to 2-0 on a bases-loaded walk. In the home half of the fifth, Banes got Iowa’s first hit of the game but was left stranded.

Loecker was able to keep the Beavers off the bases to keep the score within reach for the Hawkeyes.

In the final frame, Iowa was putting a rally together as Jackson and Banes both reached base. Sophomore Tristin Doster came through with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one. The Hawkeyes were able to load the bases with two outs but Oregon State closed it out.

Iowa finished the game with one run on four hits and no errors.
