Iowa Named Scholar All-America Team; 4 Hawkeyes Honored

MANHEIM, Pa. – The University of Iowa wrestling team was named as a 2023 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I Scholar All-America team, it was announced Friday by the NWCA.

The Hawkeyes posted a 3.3523 team grade point average, ranking 21st nationally.

Seniors Nelson Brands, Tony Cassioppi, Max Murin and Jacob Warner were tabbed as NWCA Scholar All-Americans. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.2 grade point average and have won 60 percent of their matches or maintain a 3.0 grade point average while earning All-America honors.

The honor is the fourth of Cassioppi and Warner’s careers, while it is the second career honor for Murin and the first for Brands.

Iowa has now had 58 NWCA academic honorees since Tom Brands was named head coach in 2006.
