Hawkeyes Fall To Cyclones

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team fell to in-state rival Iowa State (7-4) in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Wednesday at Bob Pearl Field.

The Hawkeyes used three arms in the game today. Senior Breanna Vasquez got her 23rd start of the season. The Cyclones scored seven runs on 10 hits and one Iowa error. Junior Sammy Diaz provided the Iowa offense going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Vasquez worked around a leadoff hit-by-pitch by getting a line out and two strikeouts to retire the Cyclones. The Hawkeyes got three straight walks to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the first as Iowa State made an early pitching change. Diaz came through with a line shot at the pitcher that resulted in a 2-0 lead for Iowa.

In the top of the third, the Cyclones got their first two hitters aboard on a single and a walk. Iowa State took the lead on a home run to left field. Junior Denali Loecker entered from the bullpen with a runner on first and one out in the inning. In the home half of the inning, senior Nia Carter led off with a hard-hit single to left field. The Hawkeyes were unable to capitalize as the tying run was thrown out at home to end the frame.

The Cyclones extended their lead to two as their leadoff batter hit her second home run of the game to start the fifth inning. Iowa State loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth. They were able to bring in three runs to stretch their lead to 7-3.

Iowa got its first two batters on base in the seventh. Junior Brylee Klosterman led off with an infield single followed with a walk to sophomore Tatianna Roman. Diaz came through again with a two-out RBI single.
