SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Santa Clara on day two of the Silicon Valley Classic. They Hawkeyes fell in game one, 4-2, before dropping game two, 3-2.
Freshman Soo-Jin Berry led Iowa with going 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored in the doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Hawkeyes struck first in the opening frame as junior Devyn Greer knocked in freshman Jena Young on an RBI groundout to give Iowa the early lead. Sophomore Jalen Adams got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes are retired the Broncos in order to start the game.
Santa Clara tied the game at one in the bottom of the second after a leadoff triple. Iowa got the run back in the away half of the fourth as Berry brought in Young on an RBI single. The Broncos kept applying pressure in the home half of the third and tied the game, 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Santa Clara managed to have their first two hitters reach base and they both came around to score on single to left field to take the lead, 4-2.
That was all the Broncos needed as they silenced the Iowa bats in the final three innings to close out the game.
The Hawkeyes were held to two runs on seven hits and had one error.
Game 2
Greer got the ball to start game two against Santa Clara. The Broncos took an early, 2-0, lead after capitalizing on two Hawkeye errors in the bottom of the second.
Freshman Jaylee Ojo entered in relief in the third inning. Santa Clara added on an insurance run in the third on a double steal to make it, 3-0.
Iowa got on the board in the fourth inning as Berry came home on a wild pitch. Senior Sammy Diaz tacked on another run with an RBI double to cut the Bronco lead to one. Ojo managed to keep the Bronco bats quiet the rest of the way and Iowa was unable to push any more runs across as Santa Clara closed out game two of the doubleheader.
The Hawkeyes finished the game with two runs on four hits and had four errors in the game.

The Hawkeyes close out the weekend on Sunday as they are set to face LMU at Noon CT at Stanford University.
