WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Iowa softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader at Purdue on Saturday afternoon in Bittinger Stadium. The Hawkeyes fell in game one, 4-0, before falling in game two, 2-1.
Game 1
Freshman Jena Young extended her on base streak to 15 games with a single in the first inning. The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to cash in.
Junior Devyn Greer (2-4) got the start in game one, her first appearance in the circle since March 9th. The Boilermakers recorded two straight two-out singles, but Greer picked up her first strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Iowa loaded the bases for the second straight inning but the Purdue pitcher induced two flyouts to get out of the inning unscathed. The Boilermakers got on the board in the third on back-to-back doubles to take the lead, 3-0.
Greer recorded her first one, two, three inning in the bottom of the third. Purdue tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to four. The Hawkeyes bats were kept quiet in the final two innings.
Iowa finished the game with no runs on five hits and had one error.
Game 2
Junior Rylie Moss led off game two with a single up the middle but was left stranded at second as the inning ended. Freshman Jaylee Ojo (3-3) got the ball in the series finale against the Boilermakers.
Iowa loaded the bases in the top of the second with two outs. The Hawkeyes got on the board as Moss drew a bases loaded walk.
After a one out single in the first inning, Ojo retired 15 straight Boilermaker hitters. Purdue had runners reach on singles in the sixth and the tying run came home on a passed ball. The Boilermakers took the lead, 2-1, on a single up the middle.
Moss and Young reached base in the top of the seventh with two outs but that was it for the Hawkeyes as Purdue sealed the victory. In the circle, Ojo allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out five.
Iowa finished the game with one run on five hits and had no errors. Purdue had two runs on four hits and no errors.
