The fifth-seeded University of Iowa baseball team continues Big Ten Tournament play against No. 1 seed Illinois on Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT) at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. The game will be televised live on BTN.

OF NOTE

• Iowa and Illinois have met three times in the Big Ten Tournament, with the Illinois winning all three games. Illinois beat Iowa 12-3 in Ann Arbor in 2007. The Illini also won in 1990 in Iowa City and 1989 in Ann Arbor.

• Illinois leads the all-time series, 134- 94-2. The Hawkeyes and Illini met for the first time in 1895, with Illinois winning, 10-8 and 4-3.

• Since head coach Rick Heller’s first season in 2014, the Hawkeyes have reached the 30-win plateau in every “non-COVID affected” season.

• Since Heller took over the program in 2014, only three schools — Iowa, Indiana and Michigan — have qualified for the Big Ten Tournament each season it has been contested.

• Sophomore Cade Obermueller was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on May 20. The Iowa City, Iowa, native threw  five innings of one-hit ball against FIU in Des Moines, Iowa. Obermueller struck out seven while walking one.

2024: Iowa-Illinois

• The Hawkeyes and Fighting Illini have met three times during the 2024 season. Illinois won the series 2-1, winning Friday and Sunday, 10-5 and 6-3. The Hawkeyes won Saturday’s game, 10-4.

• Davis Cop was 6-for-12 in the series with four RBIs. He recorded a double and a home run.

• Ben Wilmes drove in six RBIs and had two home runs.

IOWA’S B1G TOURNAMENT HISTORY

• Iowa is making its ninth straight Big Ten Tournament appearance and the 17th in program history.

• The Hawkeyes are 26-30 all-time in tournament history, including winning its first ever Big Ten Tournament title

in 2017. Iowa has made championship game appearances five times (1983, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2023).

• Iowa has won at least one game in eight of the last nine Big Ten Tournaments and is 17-10 over the past eight

tournaments.

• Head coach Rick Heller is 19-14 in the conference tournament.
