Johnson Invited To National Team Tryouts

University of Iowa softball player Kristin Johnson has accepted an invitation tocompete in the 2003 Women’s National Team Selection camp. She will join 50 other athletes asthey participate in the team camp, June 4-8, at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in ChulaVista, CA.

The players selected at the camp will compose the two teams that will represent theUSA Softball National Teams in international competition this summer.

Johnson, a senior shortstop from Cedar Rapids, was a second team NFCA All-American thisseason after hitting .348 with 28 RBIs, eight home runs and 24 stolen bases. She started everygame of her Iowa career at shortstop, and is Iowa’s all-time leader in runs scored with 160.

“I’m very honored to be selected for the National Team Selection camp,” Johnson said. “It’sgoing to be awesome to play with such a talented group of people. I just plan on heading toCalifornia and putting all I’ve got on the field. Whatever happens after that, we’ll see.”

The Hawkeyes ended the season with a 44-15 (13-4 in the Big Ten) record. They were the BigTen regular season and tournament champions, and advanced to the NCAA Region VChampionship game before being eliminated.
