The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated the Southwest Missouri State Bears, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Grant Field. Iowa upped its record to 8-2 (1-0).

Senior forward Pattie Gillern had a career day, scoring all five of Iowa’s goals. She was one goal shy of tying the Iowa single-game record, set by Kerry Lessard in 1997.

Gillern got her first goal by drilling home shot on a penalty corner with 23 minutes left in the game, it was the first time Iowa scored on a direct corner shot all season. Lindsay Miller and Debbie Birrell picked up the assists. Her second was an identical shot on a penalty corner six minutes later, giving Iowa a 2-0 lead. Once again, Miller and Birrell got the assists.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Gillern getting the hat trick on another penalty corner at 41:43. Ten minutes later, the senior got her fourth goal by converting a pass from Sarah Dawson. Then, at the 56:56 mark, Gillern got her final goal with help from Miller, who recorded her fourth assist of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Barb Weinberg made six saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Michigan next weekend for a Saturday game with the Wolverines and a Sunday contest at Central Michigan.
