Hawkeyes Defeat Maine, 5-3

DELAND, FL – The Iowa baseball team ended its five-game losing streak when they defeated Maine, 5-3, at Melching Field. Junior Nate Yoho led the Hawkeyes at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Senior Nathan Johnson picked up his first win of the season for the Hawkeyes. The righthander allowed one earned run in six innings, while striking out six Black Bear batters. Tim Gudex pitched three innings of one-hit ball in relief of Johnson.

The Hawkeyes got on the board in the second inning on three singles. Mike Mogard drove in Kris Welker for Iowa’s first run of the game and Mike Best crossed the plate on a single to right field by designated hitter Mike Mogard.

Iowa added two more runs in the fourth inning when Kris Welker got plunked by Greg Norton for the second time in as many at-bats. Welker advanced to third on a single by Best and scored on a double to right centerfield by Yoho. The Hawkeyes plated their fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Mogard, his second RBI of the game.

The Black Bears cut the deficit in half in the sixth on three hits to make the score 5-3. Aaron Izuryk singled in a run and scored a run for Maine in the inning. Johnson struck out Mark Reichley swinging with two runners on to end the inning.

The Hawkeyes added a run in the fifth inning when L.J. Mims scored on a single by Jesse Brownell.

Reichley scored the Black Bears first run in the third inning after he led off with a double.

Welker tied an Iowa record when he was hit-by-a-pitch twice in the game.

Iowa and Maine will square off tomorrow morning at Melching Field beginning at 9 a.m. (CST).
