In the first day of competition at the Louisville Invitational, the Hawkeyes came away with 11 victories, compiling an 11-9 record in both singles and doubles competition.
The Hawkeyes were paced by junior Chaitu Malempati and freshman Bart van Monsjou, who each earned a spot in the singles quarterfinals. Malempati will face Illinois’ Evan Zeder in the quarterfinals after defeating Bradley’s Matt Metully (6-4, 6-4) and Ball State’s Klint Knabel (7-5, 6-3). van Monsjou will take on Jan Polhamus of Ball State in the quarterfinals after earning victories over Murray State’s Clayton Clark (6-1, 6-1) and Bradley’s Will Lofgren (6-2, 6-4). Malempati and van Monsjou also teamed up in doubles competition to defeat Wright State’s Kevin Teufel and Quincy Jones (8-6).
The Hawkeyes got singles’ victories from J.P. Ritchie, Kyle Markham, Scott Elwell, Andrew Holm and Brett Taylor. Ritchie defeated Jeff Lester of Murray State (6-4, 6-0) while Markham beat Murray State’s Yuri Pompeu (6-1, 6-4). Elwell recorded a victory over Isaac Orme of IU Southeast (6-4, 6-2) and Holm defeated Southern Indiana’s Ryan Hughes (6-2, 6-2). After falling in the first round, Taylor rebounded to defeat Murray State’s Craig Jacobs 8-1 in the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, Ritchie and Elwell teamed up to defeat UT-Martin’s Daniel McGuire and Chris Slabbert 8-6.
The Hawkeyes will continue competition at the Louisville Invitational at 9 a.m. tomorrow, October 9th.
