IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team has added another member to this year’s recruiting class. Head Coach Gayle Blevins announced Tuesday that Rachel West, a Burlington, IA native has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa.

West, a three-sport standout at Danville High School, will play outfield for the Hawkeyes. She is a three-time all-conference selection and has been named all-district the past two years. She was a first-team all-state selection last season and was honorable mention all-state in 2002 and 2003. She finished the 2004 season with a slugging percentage of .938, which was fourth best in the state. She also has a career fielding percentage of .993.

West is also a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and has been named team MVP twice. She also finished fourth at the Iowa state track meet in the long jump.

“Rachel is a great all-around athlete,” Blevins said. “Her speed, quickness and power are great additions to our program. Rachel gets it done both offensively and defensively. She is an outstanding prospect and is a perfect example of someone who has always wanted to wear the Black and Gold. We are very pleased that Rachel chose Iowa.”

West rounds out Iowa’s recruiting class during the early signing period. Other Iowa recruits include Erin Riemersma, Quinn Morelock, Colleen McGlaughlin and Brittany Weil.
