IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team fell to Western Michigan, 4-3 today at the Recreational Building. With the loss Iowa falls to 5-1. Western Michigan improves to 6-3.
Iowa picked up one victory in the doubles competition. At the No. 3 match freshman J.P. Ritchie and junior Aaron Schachterle defeated Jeff French and Bryan Norville (8-3). The pair improved its perfect season to 6-0.
Iowa spilt the singles matches by winning three. Junior Chaitu Malempati picked up a victory for the Hawkeyes at the No. 1 spot by defeating Tommy Dennis (7-5, 6-3). Junior Kyle Markham won at the No. 2 spot over Jose Orozco (6-0, 6-4). Junior Aaron Schaechterle picked up his first win of the season in singles action by defeating Jeff French at the No. 3 position in straight sets (6-3, 7-6 (4)). Schaechterle was the only Hawkeye to pick up victories in both his singles and doubles matches.
“This was a very tough loss for our team, to a very tough opponent,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
Iowa will return to action tomorrow when it hosts DePaul. Competition will begin at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
