La Jolla, CA —The University of Iowa Men’s Tennis team edged Denver, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in California. The Hawkeyes move to 9-2 overall.

“It was another good win for us against a nationally-prominent team,” said head coach Steve Houghton.

In doubles, the Hawkeyes swept the point. At the No. 1 spot, Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor topped the duo of Viktor Zetterholm and Niklas Persson, 8-1. Chaitu Malempati and Bart van Monsjou pulled out a tiebreaker against Steve Flaks and Jason Tan, 9-8 (3). At No. 3 doubles, J.P. Ritchie and Aaron Schaechterle took a win against Ryan Slemons and Kalle Rosen, 8-3.

Iowa and Denver split the six singles matches, with the Hawkeyes picking up wins in positions four through six. Freshman Bart van Monsjou defeated Steve Flaks, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Jonny Hoak dropped Kalle Rosen, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 5. At the No. 6 position, junior Brett Taylor downed Ryan Slemons, 6-3, 6-0.

Iowa returns to action Friday when the Hawkeyes face Central Florida, with the match again being played at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
