Bloomington, IN – The Iowa men’s tennis team continued its Big Ten road woes on Sunday, losing to 56th-ranked Indiana at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. With the loss, Iowa drops to 9-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
The Hawkeyes won the first doubles match of the afternoon when J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou scored an 8-5 victory at the No. 3 position. The Hoosiers rallied back, taking the next two matches to secure the doubles point. Indiana clinched the doubles point when Iowa juniors Chaitu Malempati and Aaron Schaechterle were defeated 8-5 in a match where they had their chances.
The Hawkeyes were unable to get back on track in singles play, losing five of the six matches. van Monsjou earned the lone point for Iowa with his 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (14-12) victory at No. 4 singles. Fellow freshman J.P. Ritchie was able to take the first set in his match at No. 3 singles, but finally succumbed to David Bubenicek, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Iowa returns to action next weekend with home competitions against Purdue on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 4th-ranked Illinois on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Both contests will be held at City Park Courts.
