The Hawkeye field hockey team picked up their first shutout win of the season today defeating Providence College 5-0. The win also boosts Iowa’s record to 5-2.
“It was great to get our first shutout of the season today,” said Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “But it is early in the season and we know that we still have a lot of work left.”
Iowa didn’t waste time getting on the scoreboard. Just 2:24 minutes into the game Heather Schnepf, a junior midfielder, scored an unassisted goal. A few minutes later the Hawkeyes converted a corner shot into a goal when Shelby Roche scored on a pass from Kara Zappone to put Iowa up 2-0. The last goal of the first half was scored by freshman Lauren Pfeiffer and the Hawkeyes went into the break with a 3-0 advantage.
“We definitely had a better first half today than we did against Ball State on Friday,” said Griesbaum.
Caitlin McCurdy, a freshman forward, scored both of Iowa’s goals in the second half. A flagrant foul by Providence gave the Hawkeyes a corner shot and McCurdy’s score was a rebound goal. Her second goal was assisted by Roche and Debbie Birrell on another corner shot.
The Hawkeyes took 25 total shots in the game and 17 shots on goal. The Friars had only six total shots and only three shots on goal. The corner shot statistics were closer with Iowa taking six corners to five by Providence.
“I really like our offensive production lately. We’re taking a lot more shots and taking better advantage of scoring opportunities,” said Griesbaum.
Lissa Munley started in the net for Iowa. The freshman only needed three saves to earn the victory. Munley now has 26 saves this season and has had just seven goals scored against her for a 1.30 goals against average.
Iowa (5-2) hits the road to take on Duke (3-1) this Saturday in Durham, North Carolina.
