WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed in the second day of the four-team Boilermaker Invitational Sunday in West Lafayette, IN. All matches were held at the Purdue Varsity Tennis Courts. The other three competing teams were Purdue, Butler and Toledo.
In singles competition, the Hawkeyes were led by fourth-place finishers Aaron Schaechterle and Scott Elwell, and fifth-place finishers Christian Bierich and Greg Holm. Elwell substituted in for Butler’s Sam Brown in the third-place match. Sophomores Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie, senior Jonny Hoak and freshman Zach Frisch, and Bierich and senior Brett Taylor were supposed to meet in the fifth-place matches of their respective singles flights, but faced opponents from the other three schools in the tournament instead.
In doubles play, the team of Schaechterle and Ritchie went 3-1 for the tournament in the black flight. The duo of van Monsjou and Taylor also picked up a win on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes will continue their fall season October 7-9 at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, WI.
