Hawkeyes Face Main Draw Competition

EAST LANSING, MI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed today in the second day of the Big Ten Indoor Singles Tournament. Seven Hawkeyes saw action in main draw competition and one advanced.

Freshman Christian Bierich defeated DePietro of Michigan in the open round of the main draw, 6-2, 6-4. In the second round, he defeated Green of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-4. He will face Polley of Wisconsin tomorrow.

Seniors Chaitu Malempati and Brett Taylor, sophomores J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou and freshman Zach Frisch were all knocked out of the main draw championship bracket in the first round. They continued play in the consolation bracket. Malempati, Ritchie and van Monsjou advanced, while Frisch and Taylor were defeated and eliminated from competition. Senior Aaron Schaechterle was also defeated in the main draw consolation bracket.

Competition at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Tournament will continue tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Michigan State University Indoor Tennis Facility.
