Syracuse Comeback Sinks Iowa, 5-2

Sacramento, CA – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Syracuse, 5-2 Sunday in the final game of the Capital Classic. Syracuse posted five unanswered runs to drop Iowa’s overall record to 13-12.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Stacy May led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Emily Nichols then hit an RBI single to center field followed by an RBI double from senior Kylie Murray.

Syracuse responded with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the second to tie the contest. Syracuse added a solo home run in the third inning and a two-run home run in the fourth to gain the final advantage.

May, who went 1-3 with a run scored against Syracuse, was named to the Capital Classic all-tournament team.

Freshman Brittany Weil fell to 8-7 with the loss. She threw four innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out five. Senior Ali Arnold threw two innings of relief and allowed two runs on one hit and struck out two.

Iowa travels to Normal, IL to face Illinois State Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
