Hawkeyes Defeated By #7 Ohio State, 7-0

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team faced competition from Ohio State University today at the University Recreational Building. The Hawkeyes lost all matches and were defeated, 7-0.

The Hawkeyes faced two ranked opponents in singles competition. In the No. 1 match, sophomore Bart van Monsjou was defeated by Chris Klingemann, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Sophomore J.P. Ritchie was defeated by #76 Devin Mullings, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (6), in the No. 2 match. Freshman Christian Bierich struggled in the No. 3 match and lost to #75 Bryan Koniecko, 7-5, 6-3. In the No. 4 match, senior Chaitu Malempati was defeated by Steven Moneke, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Senior Brett Taylor was defeated in the No. 5 match by Ross Wilson, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 6 spot, junior Scott Elwell was defeated by Dennis Mertens, 6-3, 6-1.

Iowa saw tough competition in doubles also. Ritchie and Taylor teamed in the No. 1 doubles match and were defeated by #2 Green and Wilson, 9-8 (3). At the No. 2 spot, Malempati and van Monsjou were defeated by Koniecko and Eberly, 8-4. The No. 3 team of Schaechterle and Bierich was defeated by Mullings and Klingemann, 8-4.

“The final score didn’t indicate how close this match was,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We lost four or five very close matches to the number seven team in the nation.”

With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 5-6 (0-2). The Hawkeyes will go on the road next weekend to face Michigan and Michigan State.
