IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team opened up its offense Sunday, taking an 11-1 win over IPWF at Banks Field. The Hawkeyes up their record to 10-7 on the season.
Freshman Wes Freie had a huge day for Iowa, going 3-of-4 with a double and four RBIs. Senior centerfielder Nate Price was 2-of-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while junior shortstop Jason White was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Leading 2-1, the Iowa offense exploded in the bottom in the fifth for five runs to take a commanding six-run lead. White led off with a walk, then stole second. Ryan Gryzwa walked, and Price brought home the first run of the inning with a shot to the warning track in right-centerfield. Travis Sweet ripped a two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to 5-1. Freie had an RBI single and Jeff Engle had a sacrifice fly to center to end the scoring.
The Hawkeyes picked up right where they left off in the following inning, posting four more runs on four hits and an IPFW error. Price and Dusty Napoleon each had an RBI in the inning, while Freie knocked in a pair to stretch the lead to 11-1.
Sweet picked up his first win of the year for Iowa, allowing just one run and scattering six hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four. Chris Zinn, Austin Seward, Steve Turnbull and Chase Stephens each threw an inning of scoreless relief.
The Hawkeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Freie blasted an RBI double off the top of the wall in centerfield. Gryzwa gave Iowa a 2-0 lead in the second by bringing home Engel with an RBI single up the middle.
The Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday with a home game against Illinois State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. All the action will be broadcast on AM-800 KXIC.
