Hawkeyes Swept at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, IL – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Illinois, 4-3 and 10-2. Iowa falls to 16-21 (5-10 in the Big Ten).

In game one, the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jason White ripped an RBI single to right.

Illinois came right back to tie things up in the bottom of the second, then took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third. The Fighting Illini added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth.

Iowa came back in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with no outs, then brought home their first run of the inning when Dusty Napoleon drew a walk. L.J. Mims brought home another with a sacrifice fly to bring Iowa within one, but a strikeout and groundout ended the comeback bid.

In game two, the Illini jumped out to an early lead and coasted to victory. Illinois scored two in the first, one in the third before Iowa broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth with RBI singles from White and Napoleon. The Fighting Illini then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning, stretching their lead to 9-2. Illinois added an insurance run in the sixth.

Iowa and Illinois will wrap-up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
