<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Urbana, Il – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team played its regular season finale Sunday against No. 5 Illinois. The Hawkeyes were swept, 7-0. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Iowa lost to three ranked players in singles competition. Sophomore Bart van Monsjou was defeated by No. 8 Ryler DeHeart in the No. 1 match, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 match, freshman Christian Bierich was defeated by No. 55 Ryan Rowe, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore J.P. Ritchie was defeated by No. 21 Kevin Anderson in the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Brett Taylor was defeated by Pramod Dabir, 6-1 (2), 6-7, 1-0 (8), in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 match, senior Kyle Markham was defeated by Marc Spicijaric, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Aaron Schaechterle was defeated by Brandon Davis in the No. 6 match, 6-4, 6-1.
The Hawkeyes faced tough competition in doubles as well. In the No. 1 match, van Monsjou and Ritchie were defeated by No. 12 Dabir and DeHeart, 8-3. Taylor and Markham teamed in the No. 2 match and were defeated by Davis and Jones, 8-4. Bierich and Schaechterle formed the No. 3 doubles team. They were defeated by Rowe and Spicijaric, 8-1.
The Hawkeyes end the regular season 6-13 overall and 1-9 in the Big Ten. Iowa’s next competition will be at the Big Ten Tournament April 27-30 in Minneapolis, MN.
