IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team opened the home portion of its 2007 schedule with a 4-1 win over South Dakota State in the opening day of the Hawkeye Classic.

After South Dakota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Iowa tallied one run on three hits to tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Rachel West hit a bunt single and advanced to third on a double by fellow sophomore Erin Riemersma. West scored on an RBI single by senior Mindy Heidgerken.

Iowa took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third off of Riemersma’s second double of the game. Sophomore Colleen McGlaughlin ripped a single up the middle and moved to second off a West walk. Riemersma then roped a double to left field to plate both runners for the lead.

The Hawkeyes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Junior Stephanie Ackerson singled and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Heidgerken. She then moved to third on a ground ball and scored on a pinch-hit single by sophomore Quinn Morelock.

McGlaughlin and Riemersma each collected two hits to lead the Hawkeye offense.
