IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team improved its record to 36-20 overall with a 1-0 win over Drake Wednesday at Pearl Field. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Weil threw her ninth complete-game shutout against the Bulldogs.
Weil tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out seven batters. She walked only one batter and struck out the side in the second inning.
Iowa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Quinn Morelock tagged an RBI single to left field that scored pinch-runner Lindsey Digmann from second base, who replaced junior Summer Downs on the basepaths.
Morelock along with sophomore Taylor Leichsenring and junior Emily Nichols each collected a hit.
Iowa wraps up the regular season this weekend with a two-game series against Illinois. Game one is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Pearl Field.
