Final Stats

IOWA CITY – The fifth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (14-3, 4-2) was shutout 1-0, by seventh-ranked Michigan State (14-4, 5-1) Saturday. It marks the first time that the Hawkeyes have been shutout in nearly one year, the last coming against Virginia in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The lone goal came in the first half from a penalty stroke.

“We held a really great offensive team to its lowest number of shots they have attempted all season,” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said.

The Hawkeyes did a good job of keeping the ball away from Michigan State’s potent offense. Iowa held the Spartans to only six shots. Coming into the game, the Spartans were averaging 19 shots per game.

During the 20th minute, Michigan State’s Jantine Steinmetz was entering the circle with only senior Kadi Sickel between her and the goalkeeper. Sickel went to make a defensive stop but she slipped and fell covering the ball, resulting in a Michigan State penalty stroke. Jamie Deacon took the stroke for the Spartans and lifted the ball past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley.

“I don’t think that we created when we were on the attack in the circle,” Griesbaum said.

The Hawkeyes were in Michigan State territory for the majority of the game but were unable to score. Iowa was awarded with only two penalty corners and attempted eight shots on the game.

The Hawkeyes will return to action in the Big Ten Tournament, Thursday, Nov. 1 in Columbus, OH. Iowa won the 2006 Big Ten Tournament.
