Jan. 26, 2008

Iowa City, IA –

The Hawkeyes completed their second and final day at the Hawkeye Invitational today, starting their spring season with a bang. Iowa went 27-2 overall in the tournament, emulating their 27-1 overall record from the 2007 Hawkeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes ended the tournament with a 9-1 doubles record and an 18-1 singles record. Senior Jacqueline Lee defended her title as the tournament singles champions and was undefeated in singles play.

The Hawkeyes began day two of the invitational on a high note, winning all of their doubles matches against the Drake Bulldogs. Jacqueline Lee and Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated Irina Kalashnikova and Adela Aprodu 8-5, while Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen dominated in an 8-2 victory over Kari Sloboth and Sarah Plowman. Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga continued Iowa’s winning streak, defeating Veronika Leszayova and Daria Zawislak 8-1.

In singles action, Iowa was victorious, winning all matches except for one. At the number one position, Lee started out with a win over Northern Iowa’s Meghana Paritala 6-2, 6-0, and went on to defeat Erin Karonis of Iowa State 6-0, 6-4. Veselinovic swept today’s competition by first defeating Sampada Kanade of Northern Iowa 6-2, 6-1 and followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Iowa State’s Alyssa Palen. Jennifer Barnes defeated Northern Iowa’s Samantha Schnobel 6-1, 6-2 while Alexis Dorr, Klockenga, and Poggensee-Wei were all undefeated in today’s singles play.

“I’m happy with the girls’ performance,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “They got the job done and we definitely fought through a bit of nerves, which is expected in the first competition of the season. I think it was a good tournament for us to start preparation for dual matches.”

The Hawkeyes will travel to Durham, NC on Saturday, Feb. 2 to face the Duke Blue Devils. Competition will take place at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
