IOWA CITY – – No. 12 Duke used two second-half goals to come from behind and defeat the fifth-rated Iowa field hockey team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

Iowa (2-2) got on the board first with a pretty goal from forward Caitlin McCurdy in the 23rd minute. The senior stole the ball and found the back of the cage on a 10-yard backhanded shot to put the Hawkeyes up 1-0. The goal was McCurdy’s team-leading fourth of the year.

Duke (3-1) evened the contest at 1-1 on a Susan Ferger goal off a rebound at 41:04 of the second half. Ferger recorded her second goal of the game during the 61st minute. Ferger deflected a shot from Ashley Pultorak for the game winner.

Iowa had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes when it was rewarded its third penalty corner of the game. However, Lauren Pfeiffer’s shot was turned away by Blue Devil goalkeeper Samantha Nelson.

“Duke was the better team today,” said Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We didn’t execute our game plan. We need to watch film from this weekend’s games and learn from our mistakes.”

Iowa returns to action next weekend when it travels to the state of California. The Hawkeyes will play Stanford Saturday and Pacific Sunday on the campus of Stanford in Palo Alto.
