STANFORD, CA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Stanford Saturday, 3-2. The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 3-2 on the season. With the victory, Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum won her 100th game as head coach of the Hawkeyes.
Each team started quickly in the first half. The Hawkeyes got on the board first, as senior Carolina Blaum scored a goal off a rebound in the fourth minute. Moments later the Cardinal answered. Stephanie Byrne scored in the sixth minute for Stanford to tie the game at one. The first half would end tied 1-1.
The Cardinal took the lead in the 44th minute as Stephanie Byrne scored her second goal of the day. With the score in favor of Stanford 2-1, the Hawkeyes would respond quickly. In the 46th minute Lauren Pfeiffer tied the game at two, scoring a goal assisted by Tricia Dean.
Sarah Pergine then scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. She slammed it home off a rebound to make the score 3-2. The Hawkeyes would hold off Stanford for the 3-2 victory.
Iowa will play Pacific tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT) in Stanford, CA.
