Hawkeyes Head To ITA Midwest Regionals

THIS WEEK — The Iowa women’s tennis team heads to East Lansing, MI to compete in the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional Championships on October 23-28. Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Alexis Dorr, Kelcie Klockenga, Lynn Poggensee-Wei, Ally Majercik and Jessica Young.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes continued their fall season at the USTA Invitational in Flushing Meadows, NY at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center October 11-13. Iowa posted a 11-14 singles record and a 4-4 doubles record for a 15-18 record overall. Lynne Poggensee-Wei was the highlight of day one, going undefeated in singles play with a 3-0 record. She defeated Georgie Smyser of Dartmouth 6-3, 6-1 in a solid win to round out her tournament play on day three. Kelcie Klockenga went undefeated in singles action the final two days, finishing with a 4-1 record after defeating Katherine Arlak of Rutgers 6-3, 7-6 in her final match. In doubles competition, the duo of Jennifer Barnes and Alexis Dorr went undefeated during the first two days of competition, finishing the tournament with a 2-1 record.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fifth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 13-10 overall record in 2008, going 3-7 in Big Ten competition tying for a sixth place league finish. The 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Greenan has a 57-36 overall record in four seasons at Iowa. Mira Radu is the assistant coach and is in her first season with the Hawkeyes. She volunteered as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi (2003-2006) following her membership on the tennis team (1999-2003).
