IOWA CITY –
The Iowa women’s tennis team opened its spring season at home Saturday, hosting the Western Illinois Westerwinds. Iowa posted a 3-0 doubles record to open the meet, and a 6-0 singles record to earn their first team win of the 2009 season.
Iowa’s Sonja Molnar and Alexis Dorr opened the doubles season with a win at No. 1 doubles, going 8-2 against Western Illinois’ Amanda Griffin and Zi Wang. This match marked Molnar’s first with the Hawkeyes this year. Iowa continued in their domination of the doubles matches with simultaneous wins by Lynne Poggensee-Wei/Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga/Ally Majercik going 8-2 and 8-1 respectively against the Westerwinds.
The Hawkeyes powered through the singles matches, going undefeated against Western Illinois during a relative short tennis meet. Klockenga was the first to finish, sweeping Stephanie Baumer 6-0, 6-0 to give the Hawkeyes a quick lead. Iowa continued confidently with another sweep by Majercik against Yana Meinert, 6-0, 6-0. After posting wins in each match, the Hawkeyes look forward to facing their next opponent, Northern Iowa, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center on Sunday.
“We did a great job dominating and staying focused from start to finish today,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “It was a good start to the season and a nice confidence builder especially for Molnar, Young and Majercik who were playing in their first dual matches of their careers.”
