Weil And McGlaughlin Named First Team All-Region

May 14, 2009

IOWA CITY – Seniors Brittany Weil and Colleen McGlaughlin have both been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) first team all-Midwest Region. The announcement came Wednesday from the NFCA office. Both student-athletes’ names will now appear on the ballot for all-America honors.

Weil is currently 26-10 with a 1.06 earned run average, and has 328 strikeouts to just 53 walks. She has also tossed 25 complete games and 14 shutouts. The Garden Grove, CA, native ranks sixth in the NCAA in both strikeouts and shutouts, 10th in ERA and 16th in victories. Weil has also thrown five no-hitters, including a perfect game, and eclipsed the 1,000 career strikeout mark this season. She has also broken or tied six school records in 2009. This is the second-consecutive NFCA first team all-region honor, and third overall. Weil was named NFCA second team all-Mideast Region as a sophomore and first team last year as a junior.

McGlaughlin, who was one of only two players chosen as a utlity-non pitcher, has started 17 games as the designated player, 15 at third base, 14 in left field and nine in right field. She leads the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.360), hits (62), home runs (10), doubles (14), RBI (49) and slugging percentage (.628). McGlaughlin has also been honored three-straight season by the NFCA. She was a second team all-Mideast Region pick as a sophomore and first team selection as a junior.

A change this year is the announcement of just one team per region (First Team), although the team has the same number of members of the previous year’s first and second teams combined.

The NFCA Division I All-American teams will be announced Wednesday, May 27.

The Hawkeyes will open NCAA Tournament play Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) against Auburn. Fans can listen to the game live on AM-1630 KCJJ, or on hawkeyesports.com.
