KENT, OH – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Kent State Saturday in an exhibition, 7-2.

“Our attack was very balanced and the team took the game seriously,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Our preparation leading up to the game was solid. We have a long way to go but today went really well.”

The Black and Gold received contributions from all different areas as eight Hawkeyes recorded at least one goal or assist. Returning starters Meghan Beamesderfer, Tricia Dean, Jess Werley and Sarah Pergine led the charge against the Golden Flashes. Beamesderfer and Dean each recorded a goal and two assists. Werley also tallied a goal and Pergine added two goals and an assist.

Freshman Kathleen McGraw started in goal and played the entire contest. She recorded two saves. Two other newcomers, Geena Lesiak and Sarah Drake also enjoyed solid debuts. Lesiak recorded a goal and an assist and Drake added an assist.

The Hawkeyes dominated field position all afternoon. The stingy Iowa defense allowed only four Kent State penalty corners, compared to Iowa’s 16, and allowed only six shots, compared to Iowa’s 24.

The Hawkeyes return as the three-time defending Big Ten Tournament champion and 2008 NCAA Final Four participant. Iowa opens the regular season against defending NCAA runner-up Wake Forest Aug. 29 at 11:30 a.m. The Hawkeyes will face 2007 National Champion North Carolina Aug. 30 at 11:30 a.m.
