RIVERSIDE, IA – The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished the first round of Golfweek’s inaugural Collegiate Conference Challenge Sunday. The Hawkeyes are in fourth place after shooting an even par, 288. Baylor is leading the 15-team field with an eight under, 280. The first round of the 54-hole tournament was played on the 7,505 yard Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, IA.
The Hawkeyes were led by Barrett Kelpin. The sophomore shot an impressive 69, three-under par, and is tied for fourth place. Brad Hopfinger is currently tied for seventh after 18 holes. The junior birdied seven holes today to finish with a score of 70 (-2). Junior Vince India carded a 73 (+1) to finish tied for 23rd. Additionally, sophomore Chris Brant fired a 76 (+4) to finish tied for 47th while freshman Ryan Marks is sitting in a tie for 62nd with a 79 (+7).
“There were some good scores out there today, including ours,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “We left some shots out there, but we have two more rounds to improve. We’ll assess where we’re at tonight and come back out to put a couple more solid rounds together.”
The tournament will continue with 18 holes tomorrow beginning at approximately 8 a.m. Fans can follow the tournament at golfstatresults.com.
