WASHINGTON, D.C. – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 11 James Madison Friday on the campus of American University, 3-2.
“Today was a great team performance,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “The seniors played very well along with Sarah (Drake) and Geena (Lesiak) up front. This was a huge win for our season over a top-ranked opponent.”
James Madison struck first in the 16th minute. Amy Daniel scored off a deflection to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage. Moments later, the Black and Gold responded. Meghan Beamesderfer scored off a corner to tie the match. Tricia Dean and Sarah Pergine were credited with assists. The match was tied at one at halftime.
At the 51:29 mark, freshman Sarah Drake gave Iowa its first lead of the match. The goal was assisted by Jess Werley.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, James Madison was awarded a penalty stroke. Tori Lindsey converted to tie the match, 2-2.
As time expired, the Hawkeyes were awarded a penalty corner. After an initial shot by Dean was saved, Pergine collected the rebound and scored the game-winning goal for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes will close the regular season tomorrow at American University. The match is scheduled to begin at noon CT.
