Iowa Takes Second At Big 4

Feb. 7, 2010

CHANDLER, AZ – The University of Iowa men’s golf team went 1-1 in exhibition play at the “Big 4”, an annual intra-state meeting between the Hawkeyes, Iowa State, Drake and Northern Iowa. Competition was held Saturday, on Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler, AZ.

The Hawkeyes took on Drake University in the opening round, sweeping the Bulldogs six matches to none. The Black and Gold were led by junior Brad Hopfinger who fired a 70 (-1). Sophomore Barrett Kelpin recorded a 72 (+1) while sophomore Brad George and junior Vince India both shot rounds of 73 (+2).

The first-round sweep brought the Hawkeyes to the final round to take on Iowa State. With a 3-3 tie after 18 holes, the medal match was decided by criteria, giving Iowa State the advantage as they shot a lower team total for the round.

India led the Hawkeyes with an impressive round of 69 (-2) and a medal match victory. Hopfinger also fired a 69 final round, despite losing his match-up. Kelpin and George both shot rounds at even par (71), earning the other two wins for Iowa.

“We had a nice team effort in the morning match, but learned that every shot matters by allowing the final team match to be decided by a tie-breaker,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “We are learning as we go, and this will actually give us valuable focus going into the Big Ten Match-Play.”

The Hawkeyes kickoff Spring competition Feb. 12, when they travel to Coral Springs, FL, for the second annual Big Ten Match-Play Championships.
