MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team rebounded Saturday to claim an exciting 4-3 victory over No. 44 Princeton. The Tigers recently upset a then top-20 Vanderbilt before facing Iowa in Minneapolis.
Head Coach Katie Dougherty mixed up the doubles line-ups for the tough match, putting Sonja Molnar and Merel Beelen in the first spot. The duo faced the No. 26 doubles team in the nation in Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable. The Hawkeye pair did not back down, defeating the ranked duo, 8-6. Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga continued their success on the courts, taking down Rachel Saiontz and Monica Chow, 9-7. Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Alexis Dorr rounded out Iowa’s doubles attack. The newly paired team posted a 8-6 win over Melissa Saiontz and Sarah Hoffman to keep Iowa doubles perfect.
Hawkeye singles faced tough competition on the courts today. Poggensee-Wei played in the second spot, recording a win over Melissa Saiontz, 6-4, 6-3. Young also posted a win over Chow, 6-2, 6-1, and Molnar clinched the match for Iowa. The sophomore secured the resounding victory with an ace to put away her opponent, Bartlett, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
The Black and Gold return to Iowa City next weekend to take on Missouri March 6 and DePaul March 7.
