INDIAN WELLS, CA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team, ranked 25th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, added another “W” to its record Thursday to improve to 9-2 on the season. The Hawkeyes produced a 6-1 win over No. 68 Wichita State in the first of the team’s two matches over spring break.
The Hawkeye doubles teams did not let up Thursday, taking two out of three matches to secure the doubles point, one that has been key in Iowa’s close wins this season. Senior Merel Beelen and sophomore Sonja Molnar debuted in the national rankings this week at no. 23 after taking down two ranked opponents in two weeks. The pair added another ranked duo to their list, taking down no. 22 Stephanie Dalmacio and Delia Damaschin, 9-8(7-5). Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Alexis Dorr dominated Florentina Hanisch and Lily Wakim, 8-2.
Molnar, ranked 74th individually, faced off against 34th ranked Lutfiana Budiharto, winning 6-2, 6-0. Beelen added to Iowa’s team points, taking down Lenore Lazaroiu, 6-0, 6-2. Junior Jessica Young posted a 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 win over Damaschin, while Dorr recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win in the sixth spot over Wakim. Senior Kelcie Klockenga fell in the first set, 6-7, to Hanisch, but fought back to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 7-6.
The win marks Iowa’s third of the season over a ranked opponent. The Hawkeyes, led by first year Head Coach Katie Dougherty, will be back in action Saturday when the team meets no. 33 Tulsa at 3 p.m. (CT).
