Hawkeyes Jump To Fourth At Spring Break Championship

March 27, 2010

DELRAY BEACH, FL – The University of Iowa men’s golf team made a jump to fourth place in the second day of Florida Atlantic’s Spring Break Championship in Delray Beach, FL. The Hawkeyes found themselves in ninth place after shooting a 295 (+11) on day one. That was, of course, before today’s 18-hole total of 281 (-3), the second lowest score recorded by any team so far. Today’s score is also the seventh-lowest 18-hole team total in school history while their 36-hole total of 576 ranks as eighth-lowest.

Sophomore Barrett Kelpin led the Hawkeyes with a sparkling 65 (-6) which brought his 36-hole total to 137 (-5). His score today was not only the second-lowest individual score in the tournament, but it bumped him from a tie for 15th to second place. Additionally, Kelpin’s second round marks the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history while his 36-hole total is second-lowest.

“Barrett stayed in the present and stuck to his game plan,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “The weather was slightly calmer today and allowed him to make more birdies.”

Brad Hopfinger is in a tie for 11th. The junior recorded a second-round of 70 (-1) for a total of 143 (+1). Junior Vince India also improved his score from round one with a second-round score of 72 (+1). He is tied for 24th with a two-round total of 146 (+4). Chris Brant has a 36-hole score of 150 (+8) after today’s round of 74 (+2). The sophomore has a share of 52nd place. Sophomore Brad George is tied for 73rd with a total score of 154 (+12) after today’s 78 (+7).

“We talked about sticking to our game plan and the guys are beginning to trust each other again,” added Hankins. “Everyone is out there putting forth their best effort. In the end, we learn from each round and work to improve our score each day.”

The tournament’s final round will begin tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m. (CT). Live tournament scoring will be provided by golfstatresults.com.
