Hawkeyes Finish Second At Spring Break Championship

March 28, 2010

DELRAY BEACH, FL – The University of Iowa men’s golf team continued to climb the leader board on day three of Florida Atlantic’s Spring Break Championship as it finished the tournament in second place. The Hawkeyes carded an even par 284 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 860 (+8). Illinois topped the 16-team field with a score of 842 (-10). Iowa finished ahead of three other Big Ten teams in the tournament.

Barrett Kelpin continued to shine for the Black and Gold as he finished in a tie for second place, the highest finish of his collegiate career. The sophomore shot a third round of 72 (+1) to finish with a total of 209 (-4).

“This is definitely a break through tournament for Barrett,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “He stuck to his own plan and really stayed focused throughout each round. He was able to grind out a solid score despite not having his best day.”

Vince India also fired a 72 in his final round, bringing his total to a five-over par 218. The junior finished in a tie for 22nd. Junior Brad Hopfinger and sophomore Chris Brant finished in a tie for 27th with three-round totals of 220 (+7). Hopfinger recorded a 77 (+6) final round while Brant posted a 70 (-1). Also posting a 70 on the day was Brad George, who tallied a score of 224 (+11). The sophomore finished in a tie for 45th.

“I’m pleased with our team performance today,” said Hankins. “We didn’t play our best, but the two strong rounds from Chris Brant and Brad George were timely and showed our team depth. We will take the necessary steps in the next two weeks to improve and contend for a tournament championship this spring.”

The Hawkeyes will return to the links April 17 when they host the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
