IOWA CITY – University of Iowa sophomore catcher Liz Watkins has been named co-Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts in Iowa’s two-game sweep at Michigan State last weekend. The announcement came Monday from the Big Ten Office.
Watkins batted an impressive .857 (6-7) with one home run, two doubles and three RBI against the Spartans. Watkins also recorded an eye-popping 1.571 slugging percentage and a .875 on-base percentage.
Watkins started the weekend by going 2-for-3 Saturday. She followed with a perfect 4-for-4 outing Sunday, including a solo home run in the first inning. She added the game-winning RBI in the sixth with a line drive to the left field fence.
This is the first Player of the Week award in Watkins’ career. She shares this week’s honor with Northwestern’s Emily Allard and Ohio State’s Alicia Herron.
Watkins and the Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday when they travel to Ames to take on Iowa State in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be heard on hawkeyesports.com and AM-800 KXIC.
