IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in first place after two rounds of the 17th annual Hawkeye – TaylorMade/adidas Invitational. The Black and Gold are leading the 10-team field with a 586 (+10), three strokes ahead of Miami of Ohio in second. This is the second tournament which Iowa has hosted this season, and the first tournament held at Finkbine Golf Course this year.
“The course played firm and fast today,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “Everything is in great shape, so it really challenged the golfers and you had to play well to shoot a good score.”
Iowa has three student-athletes in the top 10, including juniors Brad Hopfinger and Vince India who both share a tie for third place with 36-hole totals of 144 (E). Hopfinger fired two rounds at even par (72) while India shot a first round two-under (70) and finished up with a 74 (+2). Between the two golfers, 17 rounds were fired under par during Saturday’s competition.
Chris Brant is in a tie for eighth with a 147 (+3). The sophomore carded a 73 (+1) before shooting a second round of 74 (+2). Sophomore Barrett Kelpin posted a pair of rounds at 76 (+4) to finish in a tie for 29th after day one. In his second collegiate competition, freshman Ryan Marks is tied for 36th. The Warrensburg, MO, native carded rounds of 79 and 75 to finish the day 10-over at 154.
Brad George is among four Hawkeyes competing individually this weekend. The sophomore is tied for 11th with a two-round total of 148 (+4). Sophomores Dusty Koth and James Reiss each posted scores of 154 (+10) and are tied for 36th. Additionally, freshman Jared Walahoski is tied for 50th after carding a 157 (+13).
“We always talk about trust and sticking to our game plan throughout the entire tournament,” added Hankins. “We will continue to play that way through tomorrow’s final round.”
Competition will conclude Sunday, with the final 18 beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT). Fans can follow live scoring on golfstatresults.com.
