THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa field hockey team travels to Kent, OH this weekend. The Black and Gold will face No. 19 Stanford Saturday at Noon. The Hawkeyes (1-3) will then play at Kent State Sunday at 11 a.m. Both games will be played at Murphy-Mellis Field and both start times are central.
SCOUTING STANFORD
Stanford is 2-1 on the season and is ranked 19th nationally. They have defeated Pacific (6-0) and UC Davis (3-1) and lost to Big Ten rival Michigan State (3-2). They are 1-0 away from home. The Cardinal are coached by Tara Danielson. She is in her first season at the helm of the program.
SCOUTING KENT STATE
Kent State is 2-2 and is receiving votes in the latest NFHCA rankings. They have defeated William & Mary (4-1) and Syracuse (2-1) and lost to James Madison (4-0) and Big Ten rival Ohio State (4-0). The Golden Flashes are coached by Kathleen Wiler. She is in her fifth season.
SERIES HISTORY
Iowa is 12-3 all-time against Stanford. The Cardinal defeated the Black and Gold last season, in overtime, in Iowa City, 3-2. The Hawkeyes are 3-0 all-time against Kent State. Iowa last faced the Golden Flashes in 2006, winning 5-1 at Grant Field.
FAMILIAR FACES
Iowa will face two assistant coaches this weekend that are former Hawkeye standouts. Caitlin McCurdy is a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford and Heather Schnepf is an assistant coach at Kent State. McCurdy, a two-time second team West Region All-American and two-time second team All-Big Ten selection, helped lead Iowa to the 2008 Final Four. Schnepf, an All-American, was a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, becoming only the third player in conference history to earn the award in back-to-back years.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes are receiving votes in the latest NFHCA rankings. Iowa will play, or has played, seven of the current NFHCA top 20 this season. In addition, the Hawkeyes will face or have faced six of the teams receiving votes in the latest poll. The Big Ten Conference currently has three teams ranked in the top 20. Michigan State sits at sixth in the latest rankings. Joining the Spartans is Ohio State (No. 12) and Penn State (No. 16). All Big Ten teams are at least receiving votes. Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan and the Hawkeyes all received votes.
LAST TIME OUT
The Black and Gold opened their home slate Saturday at Grant Field. Iowa fell to Miami (OH), 5-1. Kelsey Mitchell recorded her first career goal during the contest.
Sunday, Iowa recorded its first win of the season, downing Brown at Grant Field, 5-0. Junior Becca Spengler and sophomore Jessica Barnett each recorded two goals in the victory. Additionally, freshman Kim Scraper notched her first collegiate goal in the second half.
HAWKEYE NEWCOMERS
The Black and Gold feature seven freshmen on the 2010 roster. Kelsey Mitchell (Berlin, NJ), who holds the high school record for career goals scored in the state of New Jersey, and Kim Scraper (West Vancouver, Canada) have seen action on the forward line. Both have recorded their first career collegiate goals. Marike Stribos (Brussels, Belgium) and Aubrey Coleman (Mickleton, NJ) have both seen significant minutes in the Hawkeye midfield. In addition, Niki Schultheis (Hamburg, Germany), Danielle Peirson (Conestoga, Pa) and Karli Johansen (North Vancouver, Canada) have helped solidify the backfield.
HAWKEYES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
The Iowa field hockey team will appear on the Big Ten Network twice during the 2010 regular season. Iowa’s match against Big Ten rival Michigan will be shown live Oct. 10 at Grant Field at noon. The Hawkeyes’ match at home against Ohio State will also be shown. It will be televised as a same day tape delay at 5 p.m. Both times are central. In addition, coverage of the Big Ten Tournament can be seen on the Network. Iowa has won three of the last four tournaments.
BEGLIN NAMED TO 22ND IOWA HALL OF FAME CLASS
Former Hawkeye Head Coach Beth Beglin is one of six individuals who was inducted by the National Iowa Varsity Club and the University of Iowa Athletics Department into the Athletics Hall of Fame. A member of the 22nd class, she was honored Sunday at Grant Field at the conclusion of Iowa’s game against Miami (OH).
Beglin was the Iowa field hockey coach from 1988 to 1999. She led the Hawkeyes to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including seven Final Fours and runner-up finishes in 1988 and 1992. Beglin guided the Black and Gold to seven conference championships and the 1994 Big Ten Tournament Championship. She was named conference coach of the year seven times, Midwest Region Coach of the Year five times and National Coach of the Year in 1992. In addition, Beglin coached 39 All-Americans, 67 All-Conference selections, 16 U.S. National Team members and two members of the 1996 USA Olympic Team.
