Hawkeyes Win Two Singles Titles At UNI Invite

WATERLOO, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team finished play at the UNI Invite Sunday, wrapping up a dominant weekend. Iowa claimed 18 singles wins and posted an 8-3 doubles record. Sunday, two Hawkeyes were crowned champions of their respective singles bracket. The team finished the final day of the tournament with a 5-4 record in singles. No doubles were played by Iowa on Day 3.

“The team as a whole competed well this weekend,” said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “Sonja and Jessica stepped up big today and were able to clinch their brackets. We know where we are now and what we need to do to improve on and work on at practice for the next two weeks before we compete again.”

Junior Sonja Molnar won the Platinum Flight bracket with victories over Mallory Weber of Missouri (6-2, 6-1) and Northern Iowa’s Phoebe Walker (6-1, 6-0). Senior Jessica Young was the second Hawkeye to win a championship, downing Chelsea Moore of Northern Iowa 6-0, 6-2 and Jessica Kunzelmann also of Northern Iowa 6-2, 6-4 in the Gold Flight bracket. Senior Alexis Dorr fell to Kunzelmann 6-3, 6-4 in Gold Flight semifinal matchup. Freshman Christina Harazin fell to Maria Christensen of Missouri 6-3, 6-4 in the Silver Flight semifinals. Junior Cassandra Escobar, a University of New Orleans transfer, posted a victory over Nikki Reber of Iowa State 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 before losing to Missouri’s Annemijn Koenen 6-1, 6-1 in the Bronze Flight championship. Senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Rachel Stuhlmann of Missouri in an exhibition match.

Molnar will next play in the ITA All-American Invitational on October 4. The team will return to action October 8 when they travel to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.
