UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost at Penn State Saturday, 5-3. The match was held at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
The Nittany Lions (7-3, 2-1) struck first off a penalty stroke in the 14th minute. Penn State added two more first-half goals to gain a 3-0 halftime advantage. The Hawkeyes answered early in the second half. At the 45:08 mark, Jessica Barnett scored her sixth goal of the season off a penalty corner to make the score 3-1. The goal was assisted by Sarah Pergine and Geena Lesiak.
Penn State answered moments later. The Nittany Lions added a goal in the 46th minute and another in the 56th to push their lead to 5-1. The Hawkeyes responded with two goals of their own. Sarah Drake scored at the 59:56 mark to trim the Penn State lead to 5-2. Kim Scraper scored at the 64:30 mark to cut the lead to 5-3. Iowa applied late pressure but was unable to add another score.
Iowa (3-7, 0-2) stays on the road tomorrow. The Black and Gold will travel to Lock Haven for a nonconference matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
