Purdue Rallies to Down Iowa in Game 2

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Iowa baseball team lost at Purdue Friday afternoon, 6-2, in game two of a three-game set. The Hawkeyes led the contest 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Purdue scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to earn the comeback victory. The game was played at Lambert Field on the campus of Purdue.

Five Hawkeyes recorded a base hit in the contest. Tyson Blaser led Iowa with two RBI. The senior has recorded four multiple RBI games this season.

Iowa (20-31, 9-14) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With one away, senior Zach McCool and junior Mike McQuillan tallied back-to-back singles. Freshman Bryan Niedbalski drew a walk with two outs to load the bases. Blaser followed with a single up the middle to score McCool and McQuillan and give the visitors the two-run lead.

Purdue (35-18, 13-10), who only notched two hits through the first five innings, grabbed a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with its second five-run inning in as many days against the Hawkeyes. The Boilermakers took advantage of three hits and three free passes in the frame to grab their first lead of the day.

Purdue added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score, 6-2, and to clinch the series victory.

Junior Matt Dermody started for Iowa and took the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out three in five and two-thirds innings. The lefty held the Big Ten’s top offense scoreless through five innings. Junior Tim Fangman and senior Kevin Lee saw action out of the Hawkeye bullpen.

Sean Collins earned the win in relief for Purdue. He pitched a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.

The Hawkeyes and Boilermakers conclude their three-game set Saturday. First pitch of the series finale is scheduled for noon (CT) at Lambert Field. It marks the final regular season game for Iowa.
