IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Shelby Talcott has been named the Big Ten’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It is Iowa’s first weekly honor of the season. Sonja Molnar was the last Hawkeye to garner the weekly award (March 22, 2011).
Talcott posted a 7-1 mark during her collegiate debut at the Gopher Invitational last weekend. The Long Island, N.Y., native went 3-1 in the Mauer Singles Flight, the top flight of singles. Talcott, considered a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net as a high school senior, registered straight set victories over Wisconsin’s Alaina Trgovich (6-2, 6-2), Missouri’s Jamie Mera (6-1, 6-2) and Wisconsin’s Nicky Stracar (6-2, 6-0). Talcott also teamed with Molnar to win the championship in the top flight of doubles (Koivu Doubles Flight). The duo posted a 4-0 record that included an 8-4 win against Trgovich/Stracar of Wisconsin in the tournament championship.
As a team, Iowa posted a 24-5 singles record and a 10-5 doubles record at the Gopher Invitational.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Nov. 30-Oct. 2 at the Wildcat Invitational. Molnar has been selected to compete in the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 1-9.
