IOWA CITY, Iowa — THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa women’s rowing team will kick off its spring season in Clemson S.C., March 17. The Hawkeyes will compete in the varsity 8’s, varsity 4’s and novice 8’s. Iowa will face BU, Clemson, Indiana, Marist, Purdue and Syracuse.
THE RACE: In Saturday’s event, hosted by Clemson University, rowers will race down a bouyed six-lane 2000m course on Lake Hartwell.
EVENT INFORMATION: The Clemson Rowing boathouse is located on the western edge of Clemson’s campus, overlooking beautiful Lake Hartwell. With 56,000 acres of water and 962 miles of shoreline, Lake Hartwell offers plenty of rowable water.

FALL SEASON RECAP: The Hawkeyes competed in two events during the fall season. Iowa began the fall season at the 26th Annual Head of the Rock Regatta on Oct. 10. Katy Kroll and Annemaire Bernhard finished the highest for the Hawkeyes in the collegiate pairs with a seventh place finish in a time of 19:14.42. Finishing right behind Kroll and Bernhard were Laura Hallman and Erin Czupil, who posted a time of 19:15.05 for eighth place. Louise Bensz, Kroll, Bernhard, Susie Stralina, Christine Allingham, April Podbregar, Hallman and Czupil finished fifth overall in the varsity 8 with a time of 16:41.81.
The Hawkeyes finished the fall season at home when they hosted the Head of the Iowa. Iowa raced against Wisconsin, Minnesota, Creighton, Colorado and Drake. The varsity 8 team of Kendra Klaczak, Bensz, Molly Pollpeter, Bernhard, Kroll, Allingham, Stralina, Hallman and Beth Baustian placed third overall with a time of 14:23.173.
Home of the hawkeyes: The P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Boathouse was dedicated September 18, 2009. The new state of the art facility for the Hawkeyes is located within the city of Iowa City’s Terrell Mill Park, next to the Iowa River.
HEAD COACH: Mandi Kowal is in her 18th year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. In the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Rowing Championships, she coached the Varsity 4+ teams to fourth and eighth-places finishes, respectively. Kowal began her rowing career at the University of Wisconsin in 1981. She was a two-time rowing World Champion in the Women’s Lightweight 4- (1986-1987). She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1987 by the US Rowing Association and was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997.
