IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped an 11-0 decision to Michigan on Friday night at Duane Banks Field. The game is the first of three in the series.

Michigan (18-27, 5-11) struck first with a run in the opening frame. With two away and a runner on second base, Brett Winger lined a ball off the leg of Hawkeye starter Jarred Hippen. The ball ran past Iowa shortstop Jake Yacinich, allowing the runner to score from second.

In the bottom of the first, senior Mike McQuillan led off for Iowa and promptly singled to right center. The single, the 188th of his career which ranks first in Hawkeye baseball history, extended his streak of reaching base to 17 games.

The Wolverines used a solo home run and an RBI single in the top of the second to extend their lead to 3-0.

After two scoreless innings, the visitors pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 7-0 lead. Michigan used a two-run frame in the seventh to extend the score to 9-0.

In the eighth, the Maize and Blue tallied two runs to make the final score, 11-0.

Hippen started for Iowa and took the loss. The senior tossed five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. Ricky Sandquist, Andrew Hedrick and Andrew Hanse saw action out of the Iowa bullpen.

Brandon Sinnery earned the win for Michigan. The starter pitched a complete game, allowing six Hawkeye hits.

Iowa (18-23, 6-10) and Michigan will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday in Eastern Iowa. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. The second game will follow approximately a half hour after the conclusion of the first game. The two teams were originally scheduled to compete at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday.
