2 Hawkeyes Honored by College Sports Madness

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two University of Iowa softball players — freshman Megan Blank and sophomore Kayla Massey — were selected to the College Sports Madness Big Ten All-Conference teams. Blank was a first team selection, while Massey garnered second team honors.

Blank, a shortstop from Culver City, Calif., led the Hawkeyes with a .390 batting average, collecting a team-best 60 hits in 154 at-bats. She also paced the team in doubles (17), triples (5) and walks (25), while scoring 34 runs and driving in 29. Blank was second on the team with 18 multi-hit games, had a team-long 10-game hitting streak during the season.

The two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree’s 17 doubles are tied for the fourth most in a single season in Iowa history, while her five triples are tied for eighth and her .390 batting average is tied for 10th in the record books.

Massey earned second team All-Big Ten honors after posting a 15-11 record with a 2.04 ERA and seven shutouts in 26 starts. The Foothill Ranch, Calif., native allowed 74 runs (54 earned) over 185.2 innings and finished with 120 strikeouts.

Massey, who was named the Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 23, was dominant to close out the season. She went 7-2 with a 0.88 ERA over her last nine starts with five complete game shutouts. Massey allowed eight earned runs in 63.2 innings with 39 strikeouts.
