No. 14 Hawkeyes Fall to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — The fourteenth ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (5-4, 0-1) fell to Northwestern Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field, 4-3.

Northwestern (9-2, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead as freshman Dominique Masters scored off a corner at the 5:21 minute mark to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Ten minutes later is was Masters again who scored off a corner to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead.

The Hawkeyes opened up the scoring in the second half as Natalie Cafone scored off an assist from Dani Hemeon. Iowa didn’t stop there as roughly ten minutes later the Hawkeyes scored back to back goals in under a minute to take the lead. Dani Hemeon first tied the game scoring off a corner at the 54:38 minute mark. Then just 57 seconds later, Cafone scored her second goal of the game to give the Hawkeyes the lead. Cafone’s second goal marked her ninth goal of the season.

The Wildcats battled back in the final minutes to tie the game. After Northwestern pulled their goalie, it was Masters once again who scored her third goal of the day with only 1:47 left in the game to send the match into overtime.

In overtime it was Isabel Flens of Northwestern who scored the game winning goal at the 79 minute mark.

“I thought there were some really bright spot in the game today,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum.

The Hawkeyes will see action next on Oct. 5 in Ann Arbor, Mich. against Michigan. Game time is set for 12 p.m. (CT).
